Lady Gaga’s ‘Little Monsters’ are salivating at the news that the singer’s second studio album will be released on May 23rd.
The news came via the superstar’s Twitter feed, where she announced the details on New Year’s Eve. The album will be called Born This Way. The first single will be the album’s title track, which will be available from February 13th, one day before Valentine’s Day and the date for the 2011 Grammy Awards.
Born This Way follows the enormously successful release of The Fame and The Fame Monster (an updated version of The Fame with seven new tracks.) Total sales of The Fame and The Fame Monster now exceed 10 million worldwide. The album spawned two number one singles in the US (Just Dance and Poker Face) and five further top ten hits. The Fame Monster was the best selling album of 2010 worldwide.
Lady Gaga gave the BBC a short interview backstage on the last night of her Monster’s Ball tour in December 2010. She described the album as “a marriage of electronic music with major, epic, dare I say, metal or rock n roll, pop, anthemic style melodies with really sledge-hammering dance beats.”
She described the final stages of the album’s production by saying “It’s kind of like the post-operative stage of the album. I’ve already done the full heart surgery. I’m just sewing myself back up again.”
One of the album’s tracks was showcased during the tour. You And I is a piano-led rock track, complete with a raucous guitar solo that would make Guns N Roses’ Slash proud.
Gaga is renowned for her increasingly loyal fan base, to which she refers as her ‘Little Monsters’. Gaga regularly pays tributes to her fans and told the BBC that the new album is about her little monsters and her. “It’s really written by the fans, they really wrote it for me because every night they’re funnelling so much into me.”
At this stage, it is not known whether the album features any major collaboration with other singers, producers or writers. The Fame Monster yielded a worldwide smash with Telephone, a duet with superstar Beyonce. The singer has, however, recorded a duet with Elton John as part of the soundtrack for the new Disney film Gnomeo and Juliet. The track will be called Hello Hello and will be released in February 2011. It is not known whether this will be included on Born This Way.
Lyrics from the album’s title track, initially sung by Gaga at the 2010 VM Awards, became the eighth most
ed lyrics in 2010.
